PROJECT/PROBLEM

SHORT FILM

An original short film was written for the filming purposes of Shooting Blanks Productions, Abide is a student project. Penned, produced and promoted by the third-year Multimedia Design students at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography; operating under the collective name, Shooting Blanks Productions. We were all challenged with roles we have never done before in our lives. It was a huge learning curve, especially when working in a team, but was definitely worth it in the end.

Short Film Synopsis

A convict recollects his life prior to imprisonment. The light casting onto him reveals an exit that he bolts through in an attempt to escape. Running along the beach he passes the dining room table his family used to sit around. Continuing on he passes his wife and daughter. Looking back he notices they were never there. Driven by his desire to escape the recollection, he continues on. Passing his daughter’s damaged toys, introducing the theme of damage caused by his absence from their lives. Coming back past the table missing his chair. The damage now more prominent, He continues on. Approaching a crowd surrounding the crime scene. Pushing through he trips over a dead body. Sitting up he notices the black ink, symbolising blood in a more Macbeth sense. It cannot be rubbed off his Hands. In the panic he notices that he is back in the prison, in gone, no sign that he had left.

A father carrying his lame daughter runs panicking to the hospital. The forest, like the beach, removes anything that is not important, to emphasise the beauty in suffering. The mother leads the way to the hospital bed, while the doctor preps for the operation. The cloth forest symbolising the fragility of the girls life hanging in the hands of the doctor.

The war scorched earth establishes the thoughts of an old veteran photojournalist thinking of his experiences. Walking through the sheets he takes the journey back to his youth. Noticing something in the distance he runs to check who it might be. Looking for a pulse that he can’t seem to find, rolling the body over he notices that is was a close friend. The recollection he is having, projected onto him like all the photos he took during the war.

Short Film Premise

This short film represents humanity; the characters are stand-ins for oneself and portray one of countless ways in which an individual might experience moments of pain or heartbreak. What you as the viewer see, feel or understand from watching the film is unique to your past that has stopped you as a person. There is no right or wrong way to experience this film.

Deep convictions, innocent suffering, in memory lies pain.

Three seperate narratives connected through their expression of beautiful suffering.

1

Convicted by actions. Committed through choice, a convicted felon searches for absolution.

2

A family in trauma, the suffering of an innocent, fate in the hands of the healer.

3

Deep trenches, viscous stains, memory is the pain.

My responsibilites included social media design & management, set photography and sponsorship procurement. I found the process to be challenging but fun, enjoying the process of creating and maintaining a tone of voice across all our platforms. my target was set to raise 8k for our short film. Our sponsors exceeded our wildest expectations, as i was able to raise over 24k in product, service and cash sponsorships. A big thank you goes out to accord agency who help me corordinate over 50 sponsorship requests, resulting in 17 confirmed sponsors by our premier evening. It was a very rewarding process in the end.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Before we started off with anything else, it was important for us to establish our identity. We came up with the name ‘shooting blanks Proudctions’ for which we designed a logo, created facebook page for both the Production side and the short film. We also created a Instagram page to promote our brand. Throughout the process we continuously kept the audience up to date with our daily activities. because of the tongue in cheek nature of our name we also kept our audience engaged with sassy captions and relatable memes that all suited the tone of vioice of our production company.

DOCUMENTS& BRANDING

It was important for us to carry our branding through all media, including documentation for casting forms, indemnities and email responses.

SPONSORSHIPS

We are very blessed with the sponsors who supported us throughout the process. In reward to their generous sponsorship to the short-fim we wanted to make sure that they also got their spotlight, by advertising the businesses on Social Media.

MINUTES & CALENDAR

We had to make sure that we took minutes at every meeting, taking notes of what needs to be done in the following weeks by each individual in the team. We set up a calender for every week for everyone to keep up to date with what was happening when and where.
